BBB Offers Free On-Site Document Shredding and
Identity Theft Prevention Tips In Omaha and Lincoln
BBB and its partners encourage residents and small businesses in the Omaha and Lincoln metro areas to attend BBB's "Secure Your ID-Shred Day" on October 23rd and take a key step in identity protection by shredding and properly disposing of sensitive paper documents. BBB staff will be on-site to provide expert advice and tips for identity theft protection.
Identity theft continues to be a growing problem; the number of victims in the US reached 11.1 million in 2009, a 12.5 percent increase over the previous year, according to Javelin Strategy and Research. Threats abound both online and offline and no one is completely safe, but there are things you can do to protect yourself against identity theft and limit the damage.
"Fighting identity theft is a constant battle and the attacks can come at you from all fronts," stated BBB President and CEO Jim Hegarty. "Because we are all potential victims, it's important that we all try to fight identity theft and 'BBB Secure Your ID Day' is a great place to begin. Properly destroying documents that carry information you don't want getting into the hands of crooks is an important first step to fighting identity theft."
To either event, you may bring up to three boxes or bags of documents to be shredded. Documents should be removed from binders, but staples, paper clips, are okay for shredding.
